BIOGRAPHY
Michael Vass is a filmmaker and writer based in Montreal. He is the co-writer/ producer of the award-winning feature documentary CANE FIRE, which premiered at the 2020 Hot Docs Festival and was released theatrically in 2022 by Cinema Guild. He is also the director of several acclaimed short films. His work has screened at festivals, galleries, and other venues, including MoMA Doc Fortnight, Toronto International Film Festival, BAM, Indie Memphis, Prismatic Ground, DOXA, Vancouver Cinematheque, Northwest Film Forum, Criterion Channel, MoMA PS1, Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art. His writings have appeared in Cinema Scope, Cineaction, Canadian Art, C Magazine, MACHETE, The Rusty Toque, and other publications. Michael received his BFA from Simon Fraser University and his MFA from York University, and he is an alumnus of the Canadian Film Centre’s Directors’ Residency as well as the UnionDocs Collaborative Studio Program.
